One hundred and twenty years ago time was set around the World by for when the sun was at its highest - this would then be declared noon. So, for cities that stood side by side, as the sun stood at its highest just a minute or so later the time would be slightly later.
For example, in New York it would be 6:00pm and in nearby Boston it would be 6.12pm, this is because it's east of New York City.
This system of time zones worked well until modern transportation became popular, as did modern communication methods.
So in the late 1870s Canadian railway engineer and planner Sir Sandford Fleming thought about creating uniformed time zones.
The time zone system was created and was then used for the first time in 1883.
The popular idea caught on and at an International conference in 1884, hosted in Washington, DC, World time zones were set. The World was divided into 24 time zones, each a long strip from North to the South Pole, approx. 15 degrees of longitude wide and around one hour difference in time.
As each time zone was different by a whole number, it was easy to convert from the time in one zone to the time in another, and thus travel and communication was much easier to accommodate.
Even today these original time zones are still in operation by over 90% of the World's Countries.
