Sheffeld Airport Lost Luggage ...

It's a very frustrating start to your holiday - you arrive safely at your holiday destination but your baggage doesn't.

Even today, with advanced computer tracking systems Sheffield Airport lost luggage is still common place. Sadly is Sheffield Airport/Robin Hood Airport delayed luggage or that's damaged.

So if this happens to you read this useful guide on how to go about reporting your Sheffield Airport lost luggage/Robin Hood delayed baggage/Sheffield stolen baggage or Robin Hood damaged baggage:

To find the details of the lost luggage department of your airline enter the airline details in the box below:

Reporting Your Lost Luggage ...

The governing body, the British Airports Authority, state that each airline is responsible for the security of its passengers' luggage.

Should your luggage go missing in transit you must report your baggage as lost to the Lost Baggage Desk at the airport.

  • Immediately report your lost luggage to the Lost Baggage Desk at the airport.
You will need to describe your luggage, you'll then be given a lost luggage reference number so you can monitor the progress tracing your lost luggage.

You may need to give a list of the contents within the lost baggage, and even to provide original receipts. The airline then acts like an insurance company, accessing your claim and offering you compensation. However, like insurance companies the offer is unlikely to match the amount of your claim.

Lost luggage is not officially declared as lost until it has been missing for - normally - 21 days.

After when you are able to claim for compensation. The Montreal Convention states that airlines have to pay their passengers up to £800 in compensation so you're unlikely to be able to claim for any more than this as airlines tend to stick to this guide.

It may be that your airline advise you to claim via your travel insurance policy, however, depending on the type of insurance you have purchased will depend on whether your baggage is covered. However, by rights, and as stated by the British Airports Authority, they are responsible for your luggage.

Transfer Flights

If your flight is broken up between several airlines you might be able to only check your luggage in once, at the first check-in desk.

If this is the case and your bags go missing you are allowed to claim against any of the airlines that carried them. However, as you'd expect, they will all try and blame each other.

LRT - Limited Release Tags

LRTs or Limited Release Tags are issued to certain types of luggage to remove responsibility by the airline - luggage includes musical instruments, sporting equipment and push chairs.

If an LRT is applied to your luggage and is then damaged remind the airline they must accept liability for it as set out in the Montreal Convention as they have agreed to carry the item.

Robin Hood Delayed Luggage ...

As stated by the Montreal Convention a passenger's luggage is only termed as 'delayed' for a period of 21 days, then it's termed as missing or lost.

If your luggage is delayed you may be offered an immediate one-off payment, set at a certain amount in which to cover emergency purchases like toiletries and underwear.

Or you may be offered a set amount of money per day up to a maximum number of days.

Or, you will have to buy the items and then you'll be reimbursed upon presentation of the receipts.

After the 21 day period has expired you are able to put in a claim for compensation for your lost luggage.

Robin Hood Damaged Baggage...

To process your claim for damaged baggage the amount offered will be based on the value of the carrying suitcase and the contents.

It's likely you'll be asked for receipts to prove the value of the items. Don't be surprised that a scale of depreciation placed on any claim made, and that the figure offered is not the value of your damaged luggage.

Sheffield Lost Baggage ...

If you are claiming for an individual items that's gone missing from your baggage you will find claiming very difficult as it's almost impossible to prove it was in your baggage to start with.

Therefore, always use the highest quality luggage you can afford and use solid padlocks.

Also note that many airlines carry a clause in their terms & conditions stating they don't accept responsibility for valuable or perishable i.e. mobile phones, cameras, camcorders and jewellery. Although it's arguable whether an exclusion like this is compliant with the Montreal Convention.

Also note not to pack anything considered “items unacceptable as baggage” in the airline’s conditions of carriage as you won't be able to claim.
