Preparing To Leave ...

Everyone of us can do a little something to help protect our homes whilst we are away - especially when almost half of all break-ins happen when a flat or house is left empty for periods of time.

Chances are you need to think about the following:

  • Cancel milk and newspaper deliveries.

  • Don't order anything that is likely to need a signature to be delivered - like Recorded Deliver - as otherwise it will be returned to sender if no-one collects it from the Post Office.

  • Change any meetings or Doctor's appointments etc.

  • Ask a local friend or family member, or a good neighbour, to collect up any post from the doorstep.

  • Throw away, or use, any perishable foods in your fridge.

  • Switch off the main sockets into your TVs etc. as a safety measure.

  • Save yourself money and energy by turning off your central heating and hot water in the Summer. Or, in the Winter reduce the timings and temperature (but don't turn off altogether).

  • Make sure any pets you have are looked after - if a house-sitter will be walking your dog make sure they have met first. If they are going into a kennel, or your cat into a cattery, pack their favourite toys.

Home Security Tips ...

Use the following home security tips to protect your home whilst you are away - they are easy to do and could save you a lot of heart ache.

  Top Ten Security Tips
  1. Automatic Lighting Make your home look lived in whilst you are away by attaching light timers to your lights. This will then confuse any potential burglars.
  2. Post Arrange for a friend who's close by to drop by and pick up post etc. that's on your doorstep (that otherwise advertises you aren't home). Or you could ask a good neighbour or family member.

Or the Keepsafe service by Royal Mail holds your mail for up to two months while you are away.

3. Deliveries Don't forget to cancel newspapers or milk or anything else you might have delivered each day/week.
4. Baggage Tags: Only write your address on your return luggage label when checking-in for your return flight - otherwise, anyone who handles your luggage will see where you live and know that you will be away.
5. House Checking: Ask either a good neighbour, friend or member of your family to spot check your home is safe and well whilst you are away.

Ask them to park on the drive, to look like someone is home, and also to open and draw curtains sporadically.

In the event of an emergency leave your contact details with them too.
6. Neighbourhood Watch: For added security see if your local area has a Neighbourhood Watch Scheme for you to join -  www.neighbourhoodwatch.net to find out more.
7. Valuable Items: Any valuable items that will be at home whilst you are away could be locked in a safe with your Bank. Or you could ask a good friend to look after so they aren't in an empty house.

TVs, stereos and DVDs etc. are very tempting for burglars when on view from the window - move them out of view if you can.

Is your home and contents insurance up to date, and does it give you enough cover?
8. Alarm:  If there's a break-in, or just a false alarm, and you are away your security company will need to know who your temporary key holder will be - think about asking a good neighbour.
9. Outdoor Storage: Expensive items like bikes, golf clubs and power tools could be stored inside whilst you are away.
10. Locks: Check that all of your doors and windows are locked shut.

For added security advice contact your local police force to see if they offer home security improvement checks - many do.

Packing Tips ...

When packing your bags your need to think carefully about what you'll need on the flight and on your travels but also any restrictions on luggage allowances and prohibited items you need to give consideration to.

If your luggage is too heavy you risk paying a big fine to take it, or you will have to discard some of it (and it will then be destroyed) so check your allowances before you travel.

Mostly the maximum weight of each bag is 32kg (70lbs) or less but this can vary from airline to airline, however often the weight limit can be found on the reverse of your flight ticket.

Should you be needing to take extra luggage contact the airline you are flying with in advance of travel. The same applies if you have any luggage that is very big or outsized. This will avoid any embarrassment or inconvenience at the airport.

At check-in you'll be asked some security questions about your baggage, for example who packed it, if anyone has asked you to carry anything for them etc.

More detailed information about what cannot be packed in your hand luggage or main luggage can be found by visiting the Security section of this website.
