Should you be considering taking your mobile phone on holiday read through the following unofficial information on travelling with your mobile. By doing so you can make sure you are not caught out when taking your mobile phone abroad like getting on the right tariff and setting your phone up.

Your Mobile Phone Abroad...

Many of us these days, when leaving Robin Hood Airport, take our mobile phone on holiday. However, before you do make sure you read the following unofficial information so you don't get caught short with either very expensive overseas calls or that your phone doesn't actually work abroad when you get there.

So read on when leaving Robin Hood Airport and travelling with your mobile phone...

Taking Your Mobile On Holiday ...

When travelling with your mobile phone be sure to check the following with your Network provider:

  • Enabled your mobile phone for 'International roaming' in advance of travel as this can take up to 14 days and without it you won't be able to make and take calls.

  • Will your current handset work in the Country you are travelling to? If you're going to America you'll need a tri-band handset.

  • See how much overseas calls will cost you on your current tariff - they are much more expensive than UK calls.

  • See if you can change tariffs to once that includes International calls if you are a regular traveller.

  • Ask if there are any deals on calls made from the Country you are travelling to.
Here are the customer service numbers for the UK Network providers:

  UK Network Providers
  O2 0870 225 7879
  Orange 0800 079 0006
T-Mobile 0845 412 5000
Three 08707 330 333
Virgin 0845 6000 789
Vodafone 08700 700 191
Tesco Mobile 0845 301 44 55

Mobile Phones Abroad - frequent use ...

See if you can swap tariffs onto one that includes cheaper calls abroad for a monthly fee, also check any lock-in times you'll be tied into.

If you can't, or don't want to, change tariffs think about using an alternative International SIM card for the duration of your trip away.

International SIM cards can be bought at International airports and some UK retailers. Do check if there is an expiry date on the card - some do - and that isn't before you travel.

Or click this link to SIM for Travel to buy an International SIM card.

You will still need to take an electrical adapter for your phone charger when travelling with your mobile phone.

Using Your Mobile Phone On Holiday...

When using your mobile phone on holiday it's just the same - in terms of use - as if you were in the UK. Your Network provider routes your calls into a local transmitter, in the Country you are staying in.

Calls from abroad cost a lot of money because they are routed, from the local transmitter, back to the UK. For instance, if you were making a call in France to a friend who is also in France the call travels 1,800 miles from France, to the UK, back to France again! What's more, the person receiving the French/UK call is also charged to take the call.

This is why it is strongly advised to research into taking your mobile phone abroad before you travel so you can save a lot of money!

Important Contact Numbers...

When travelling with your mobile phone add these numbers to your mobile address book:

  • the telephone number of your Tour Operator and Hotel

  • the telephone number of the local British Embassy

  • your travel insurance provider's contact numbers

Important Numbers - Government Offices and Agencies
  Foreign & Commonwealth Office Enquiries +44 (0) 207 008 1500
  Services for Briton’s overseas +44 (0) 207 008 0210
Travel Advice +44 (0) 845 850 2829

Mobile Phone Security ...

Before you travel make sure you have taken a separate note of your mobile's IMEI / serial number. Put this somewhere safe, away from where you keep your mobile. Keep this along with a note of your mobile number and the number of your Network provider's customer services department. Also contact them in advance to see if they need any other unofficial information like passwords etc.

Then, if travelling with your mobile phone, and it is lost or stolen abroad you can arrange for your phone and/or SIM card to be blocked or cancelled.

Please note that few travel insurance policies include cover for mobile phones.
